Here are just a few Valentines ideas for kids to make.
Homemade Beaded
Jewelry Crafts Gallery
Materials: Fimo or Sculpey clay (available at art supply stores), Aspic or tiny cookie cutters, Toothpick, Thin cording or string, and Safety pin
Instructions:
1.
To
make symmetrical hearts, use the side of a pen to roll flat a lump of clay to
about 1/8-inch thick.
2.
Cut
out pieces with a heart-shaped aspic cutter. For free-form hearts, use your
fingers to form or coil individual bits of clay. You can even swirl together
multiple colors.
3.
Use
the toothpick to make a hole in a corner of each bead and then bake hearts
according to package directions.
Heart Key Chain
Materials: Red and pink mold-and-bake clay, such as Sculpey
III, Rolling pin, Heart-shaped cookie cutter or small knife, Pencil, Craft glue,
Aluminum foil, Index card, Scissors, Clear Con-Tact paper, Hole punch, Metal
key ring, Small metal slip rings (available at craft stores), Floral wire and Permanent marker
Instructions:
1.
Partially
blend red and pink clay to create a swirled effect. Roll the mixture out to
about 1/8-inch thickness.
2.
Use a
heart-shaped cookie cutter (or a small knife; a parent's job) to cut the clay
into a heart. Make a small hole about 1/4 inch from the top with the point of a
pencil. Follow the package directions for baking the clay, then set it aside.
3.
Glue
aluminum foil to both sides of an index card or piece of cardboard. Let dry.
Then draw an oversize key on the foil and cut it out. Cover with clear Con-Tact
paper, trim the edges, and punch a hole in the top of the key.
4.
Attach
both small rings to the big key ring. Thread the key onto one. Connect the clay
heart to the other small ring with a loop of floral wire. Write a message (such
as "The Key to My Heart") on the key with the marker.
Oracle of Love
Materials: 1-inch diameter Styrofoam ball, Scissors, White craft foam, Permanent marker, Hot glue gun, Small, clean glass jar with lid (we used a baby food jar), Teflon tape (if needed), and Crayola Model Magic clay*
Instructions:
Gently form the Styrofoam
ball into a cube by pressing it against a table with your thumb.
Cut 6 hearts from
the craft foam and write an answer with permanent marker on each one, such as
"Yes," "No," or "You bet." Attach these hearts to
the cube with hot glue.
Place the answer cube in the jar and fill the jar with water right to the top. Close the lid tightly and test for leaks. If your jar isn't watertight, wrap Teflon tape around the jar's threads before closing the lid.
Cover the jar with Model Magic clay, leaving the bottom of the jar clear. Roll small pieces of Model Magic into snakes, and use them to decorate the outside of your oracle with hearts.
To use your oracle, keep it lid-side up as you ask your question, then turn it over to learn the answer.
Have a great Valentines Day!!
